Does Diabetes Increase the Risk of Cognitive Disorders in the Elderly in India?

In India, one in ten elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes exhibits cognitive disorders. This often overlooked reality reveals a close link between this metabolic disease and the decline of brain functions. Recent research conducted on 832 participants, including 698 diabetics, shows that people suffering from diabetes are nearly nine times more likely to develop memory and thinking problems than those without the condition.

Executive functions, which are essential for organizing tasks or solving problems, are particularly affected. These abilities play a key role in the daily management of diabetes, such as taking medication or adopting a healthy lifestyle. Their decline can therefore worsen the disease itself, creating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break.

Advanced age and unemployment increase the risk of cognitive disorders, while education and physical activity offer notable protection. Individuals with longer educational backgrounds or who remain physically active appear to be better preserved. These factors influence what is known as cognitive reserve, the brain’s ability to resist age- or disease-related damage.

The results also highlight that nearly one-third of diabetic participants experienced difficulties in at least one cognitive domain, even without apparent symptoms. This suggests that problems may exist before being detected, reinforcing the importance of early screening.

In India, where the number of people with diabetes is the highest in the world, these findings take on a particular significance. They remind us that the brain health of diabetic seniors also depends on their environment and lifestyle habits. Targeted interventions, such as exercise programs or cognitive stimulation workshops, could help limit these risks and improve quality of life.
